Blog fatigue

It seems that on many of the blogs I usually read, there is something that looks like a blog fatigue. There are by far not as many entries as there were some time ago, and for example Bureau Belgrado seems to have given up completely - regardless of their award last year.

I wonder what causes this. The change of seasons? Or is there something else?

The last few days the whole city was turning red and white. In the Netherlands that would usually mean that some soccer team is playing an important match. Not on the Balkans (Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania). Here it is a pagan tradition related to the transformation from winter to spring. It is called Martenitsa in Bulgaria, and Mărţişor in Romania and Moldova. Friends give each other red and white dolls, bracelets or other tokens in red (sun, or Mars) and white (snow or peace) on 1 March.

The colours signify the fight between the snow and the sun. The transition from winter to spring. The tokens are meant to give luck and healh to the people wearing them.

Interestingly enough Sofia saw its first snow this season on 27 February. And it instantly disappeared. The temperature was rising above 10 degrees again today, the sun already seems to have won even before Martenitsa started.

Away, but feels like home

When I was flying to Sofia this morning, I read the following sentence in the inflight magazine: Човекът е човек, когато е на път, or a man is only a man when he is travelling. So travelling it is. I had never been here before, but somehow it seems all too familiar. The langauge, the customs, the way people react. Feels like many places I've been to recently. But still, it's the little differences.

I hope I'll be able to tell when I leave again from here in some days!

(in)famous Dutch: who killed Pushkin?

According to the official version Alexander Pushkin was mortally wounded and died after he fought a duel with Georges d'Anthès, 170 years ago last week. Georges d'Anthès, aristocrat, was the protégée, fosterson and later heir of the Dutch ambassador Baron Van Heeckeren, after which he would call himself Georges-Charles de Heeckeren d'Anthès.

Both the relationship between the Baron and his protégée and the reasons for the duel, have caused gossip. Last week Komsomolskaya Pravda quoted recent research into the matter. It says that the alleged reason for the duel, a meeting between d'Anthès and Pushkin's wife took place only after d'Anthès married the poet's sister-in-law.

The article suggests that instead a gay intrigue involving d'Anthès, Van Heeckeren and others led to the poet's death.

Russian Pride

(This entry is not about Moscow Pride - although that might also deserve attention in the blogosphere - but about the pride of the Russians.)

Yesterday an article appeared, in which 75% of Russians are quoted to find that Russia has its own way and almost 50% see the EU as a threat. Interesting quotes such as “benefits come from the West, but the Truth lives in Russia” are found there.

Another interesting finding is that “although it has been possible for Russians to go abroad for fifteen years, 42% of Russians would say The Netherlands and Holland are different countries”. Funny question to ask, it seems the investigators who made the survey had no access to Wikipedia.

The article explains Russian self-centeredness from long isolation. Themes pretty much confirmed in my 1909 guide book. It has an article on National Pride (Nationalstolz). That article makes a distinction between the higher social classes (said not to have a strong national pride) and the ordinary Russian (said to believe the Russians were blessed by God more than other peoples.) The latter group even believed that the Saints spoke Russian, and the book warns the Germans not to discuss the national origin of the national patron Saint Nicholas with ordinary farmers. Interestingly enough the book claims that St. Nicholas was an Italian. Wonder where they got that from. It even warns to stay away from discussions about the military or politics. Talking too much about that might have lead to being considered a spy a hundred years ago!

The article points to another article about Slavophilism, the movement thought to believe that Western civilisation was shaped around three themes: the Catholic church, ancient Roman culture and invasionist politics. The Russian peoples however submitted voluntarily to their overlords, the Varangians. This created a harmony between the different classes in society, the church and the Tsar. This harmony was destabilised by Peter the Great, who introduced Western ideas about nobility. The true Russian spirit was said to have survived amongst the commoners. They were the representatives of the true Russian spirit, as passed down from generation to generation. The spirit consists of spiritualism, trust in the government and obedience.

It would be interesting to see if the features described above made the Russians susceptible to Socialism. There should be at least some studies. I did not find much online, although my searches did yield some other interesting facts.

1909: Street Life

Try to imagine. A Russian city a hundred years ago. Streets are quiet – according to Western European standards. All that can be heard is the sound of shouting people: drivers asking passers-by to be careful, street vendors praising their wares. When reading these things, it seems close, but yet so far away. Time gone by.

The street vendors are still around today. But on the squares they generally no longer praise their wares – or at least not shouting. The products are the same, but some of the products mentioned are still exotic to the Western eye: pies, bliny, mushrooms. Some others are more common: ice cream, citrus fruits, flowers and newspapers. One category of vendors did not survive the changes made during the Russian Revolution: Tatars selling second hand clothes (interestingly enough they would praise them as "khalat").

Too bad they did not use Edison’s phonograph for recording the street sounds on Khreschatyk (picture left, source: wek.kiev.ua) around the turn of the twentieth century.

Das Leben und Treiben in den russischen Großstädten ist wenig lebhaft. Das Straßenbild bekommt nur Bewegung durch die sehr rasch fahrenden Droschken und Equipagen. Die Droschkenkutscher warnen die Vorübergehenden durch den Ruf берегись! Im Sommer sieht man auf den Strassen Verkäufer von Gefrorenem und Kwas die ihre Kübel und Glaskrüge auf dem Kopfe tragen. Die Eisverkäufer rufen ihre Ware laut aus: мороженое! Eine Eigentümlichkeit Rußlands bilden die wandernden Pastenbäcker, mit Pirogen und Bliny’. Zitronen- und Apfelsinenhändler sind in den Hauptstädten besonders häufig. Weit ertönt ihr Ruf: апельсины, лимоны хорошіе! In den Höfen erscheinen Blumenhändler, deren цвѣты, цвѣточки! lautet. Häufig hört man auch den Ruf грибы, грибочки! Händler mit alten Kleidern, die in Rußland meist Tataren sind, rufen халаты! In den Nachmittagsstunden laufen die Zeitungsträger die Straßen entlang und suchen einer dem andern zuvorzukommen. Laut ertönen ihre verschiedenartigen Rufe, mit denen sie die Käufer anzulocken suchen.

Russia in 1909

A couple of years ago, I bought an interesting book: Langenscheidts Land und Leute in Rußland. It describes the Russian Empire just before it collapsed. It is a topical dictionary published in 1909 in Berlin by Langenscheidt. The book has articles on various aspects of Russian society: Land and People; State, Government and Rule of Law; Holidays; Religion; Spiritual Life; Agriculture; Nature and Cities; Social Affairs; The Russian; Transportation and other topics.

By far the chapters that describe the Russian soul are my favourite. The book is certainly not free from bias, but probably that is what makes it more interesting. It describes the Russians as seen through the eyes of contemporary Western Europeans. And it appears to be quite accurate in doing so.

I will try to share some of the chapters here with you. One problem is the language. It’s in German.

Funny things with pictures

Long before the introduction of Photoshop twenty years ago this year, the Soviets - and even some Russians before them - knew their way around pictures.

Probably the most infamous must have been the way Stalin dealt with is political opponents. According to the way he saw them, he would have them removed from the pictures where they appeared. Best known is the way he dealt with Trotsky.

And there was much to do at the time of World War II. Probably Yevgeny Khaldei can be considered as the master of his time. Both in staging and in manipulation. Coen already wrote about this on the occasion of Victory Day last year. Of course it was realistic - yet unheard of that Soviet soldiers would loot their Nazi victims and wear multiple wristwatches on the famous Reichstag picture. The picture itself was already staged, but in order for it to express the true spirit of Soviet Victory, some airbrushing needed to be done consequently.

One fine example of nice things that can result from tricking images, is the work of Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii, available in digital high quality at the Library of Congress. He portrayed Tsarist Russia in full colour between 1909 and the Revolution. He took images using colour filters for red, green and blue. The negatives of these images allowed for reconstruction of the true colours almost a century later. This process produced some remarkable images of the “lost world”, like the portrait of the Minister of the Interior under the Emir of Bukhara that can be seen at the top of this story, taken before 1915.

And sometimes pictures have the power to portray that reality can be bizarre too.

The picture on the left is Cathedral of the Dormition at Kiev Pechersk Lavra before it got demolished during World War II. The picture on the right was taken by me in 2001, shortly after the reconstruction. It seems the architects who undertook the reconstruction did not have pre-WWII footage of the Cathedral. As can be clearly seen, the cathedral was not symmetric before the war, but it is now!

Famous Dutch: Civil Type

After his first trip to The Netherlands in 1697 and in an attempt to open the window to Europe in St. Petersburg, Peter the Great took home many influences from The Netherlands. He studied ship building in Zaandam and he took home a large assortment of human and animal fetuses with anatomical deficiencies, bought from the Dutch physician Frederick Ruysch and exposed at the Kunstkamera. But he also wanted to bring Russian science and society closer to Europe.

One of Peter's reforms, was that of typography. He ordered for a new type to be designed. It is called Civil Type, after its non-clerical use, and is still in use today. It was ordered with typographers from Amsterdam and introduced in 1708. So next year, it will be the 300th anniversary of the modern Russian typography.

The Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) voiced its support for a world-wide campaign in commemoration of the typographic reform of Czar Peter the Great in 2008.

Stolen Shevchenko case partly solved

Last week Halten police (Canada) arrested a suspect of a somewhat bizarre theft.

In 1951 a statue to the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko was placed in Toronto. It commemorated the 60th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada and their historic contribution to the economic, cultural, social and political life of this country.

Late December 2006 the statue disappaered from its marble pedestal. On 2 January Bill Harasym, president of the Taras H. Shevchenko Museum and Memorial Park Foundation, already speculated about the motives: "It looks like it was pulled down and to me it smacks of crooks out to make a dollar and melt the bronze down." And indeed the head of the poet appeared at Thomson Metals & Disposal in Burlington.

Meanwhile the foundation's president still has hope that the torso is found and the statue put back together: "I sincerely hope that it's in some kind of condition that it could be reconstituted. Then I would start to believe in miracles," he adds.

The statue is believed to contain 13,000 euro worth of scrap copper.

UPDATE: in 1988 the poor lads in Toronto also already lost their Shevchenko Museum to arson. The Park and Monument remain to this day as a reminder of our heritage, they write. I suppose now the Park remains...

It's the oil, Stupid!

About one year after the last big dispute that terrified Europe, the Russian bear shows its teeth again. The current victim is little brother Belarus.

It all began last year, when the Russian state-controlled Gazprom announced that Belarus was to pay "market prices" for the gas it imports from Russia. Tough negotiations started - with both sides threatening to stop the transit of gas from Russia to the EU - a compromise was reached just in time.

But that was not all. Yesterday Russia stopped the export of oil to the West based on allegations that Belarus was illegally keeping some oil itself. Russia did so without informing its European buyers, who were not amused.

In Soviet times and roughly the first decade after the break-up, Russia was not overcharging its neighbours. Since the beginning of 2006 we know that Russia uses the height of energy prices for geo-strategic purposes. Infamous defectors to the West, such as Georgia and Ukraine, were the first ones to bleed over this issue. But what did Belarus do wrong to lose the favour of Russia?

In the eyes of the West, Belarus president Lukashenko is Europe's last dictator, a title he earned right after the fall of Milošević in Serbia. But what is wrong from the Russian point of view? Both countries even constitute a Union together. The treaty was signed 10 years ago, but the coming into force goes very slowly. Both parties are complaining that the creation of that state is overdue. And turning it around: what is a Union State worth if the constituents cannot even reach an agreement on energy?

And what about the people? Well, luckily it will not freeze this week in Belarus. The forecast for this week (+5 degrees C) lies more than 10 degrees above the climate average of -7. And otherwise they can always order nice and warm corporate slippers in Moscow. Like the fancy Gazprom ones to the left.

Russian fourth branch

Russian scientist and editor Vladislav Inozemtsev cautiously describes the Russian fourth branch in an article that appeared last week.

Not a very optimistic story: You would think that with this massive apparatus at the state’s disposal it would be possible to ensure strict observance of the law and provide people with effective protection of their lives and property. But statistics indicate that this is not the case at all, Inozemtsev writes. A bit further he adds: Russia has now become something of a security economy that is only able to extract raw materials from the earth and guard the system created for their distribution.

The author seems not very sure about the long term economic viability of the oligarchic police state in its current form. I suppose the system is likely to survive the 2008 presidential election, though.

When reading Olaf's story about a rock concert where the Soviet Hymn was put to a brand new arrangement, I came across this sick movie on YouTube. Someone who thinks he's funny put the National Anthem of the Soviet Union to the 1986 Chornobyl disaster footage.

There was more news about the power plant this week. Earlier this week Nestor Shufrych, Minister for Management of Emergencies, denied rumours that one of the sarcophagus' walls had collapsed. And two men were arrested on Tuesday for stealing radiators (what's in a name?) from the exlusion zone.

Ievan Polkka

2006 brought another succesful Finnish-Japanese co-production. It seems the Leekspin followed the path paved by Muumi in Japan in the 1990s.

The music is a 1930s Finnish song called Ievan Polkka, performed by the Finnish band Loituma. It is completed by a popular manga anime featuring Orihime Inoue from the Bleach series.

And of course there's a lot on YouTube: Ievan Polkka unplugged, Loituma dance, a cheap fake, an accelerating version, the commercial Jamba ringtone version, a home video and finally the real thing.

A 'new' camera

Last week I bought a 30-year-old 'new' Zenit-E.

I had been looking for one already since summer, but I had no clue what would be a suitable price. Before my trip, I had asked friend Oleg in Moscow. According to him in Kyiv $40 ought to be enough for a functioning camera. Having no time to contact Oleg's friend in Kyiv, I almost forgot about the whole thing.

When one of the team members decided to buy an old grey (East?) German dial phone, I suddenly remembered. I asked one of the Ukrainian counterparts. He had a friend who revives old Soviet cameras. 30 minutes later he could meet us. The man offered a working 1970s Zenit-E with two working objectives: one Industar 50-2 and one Helios 44-2. When the man told me the price (UAH 150 = $30) for the camera and the two objectives, I had no incentive to bargain for a better price.

The Zenit-E was produced by the S.A. Zverev Krasnogorsky Zavod, the former Krasnogorsk mechanical plant (KMZ) between 1965 and 1980. It was the single most produced type, with an estimated 8,000,000 produced.

The first results of my photography are expected by next week :) Not sure when I'll have time to scan them and share them with you here!

Old Saint Nicholas traditions

Last week in Romny, Sumy oblast, Ukraine we celebrated St. Nicholas - 19 December according to the Julian calendar that is in use in the Slavonic Orthodox churches.

St. Nicholas is celebrated with dances, sketches, poetry, food, music, jokes, drinks - in any possible order.

The municipality of Romny had invited the foreign guests, the pensioners from the school and school children to the town's vocational school for celebration. The typical food consisted of typical autumn and winter stuff like roasted pumpkin, new wine, and Guelder-rose berries (Kalina). The latter was not as much enjoyed by most guest as by the hosts.

After the performances and fortune telling were over, a rich dinner was served, consisting of delicious Ukrainian food, and nice drinks. And as the tradition has it, the partying, singing, drinking and dancing continued until late at night...

... some of the foreign guests were even tempted into joining the music and other local habits...

Laatst een wat onverwacht antwoord op mijn zoektocht naar vertalingen van Oekraïense dichters. Maar ook het antwoord op de vraag van Bootsma: Bij Tresoar hebben ze van Freark Dam niets in het Oekraïens kunnen vinden. Wel van Rink van der Velde, namelijk 'De Fûke'.

De Fûke ('de Fuik') gaat over een Fries vissersgezin tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In de kwartierstaat van auteur Rink van der Velde (die in 2001 overleed) lees ik: De koarteoarlochsroman De Fûke út 1966 is fuortkommen út fraachpetearen dy't er as sjoernalist mei âldere minsken út de feanterijen hân hie yn kombinasje mei werklik barde foarfallen út de oarloch en in lokaasje oan 'e Tsjûkemar dy't him ynspirearre. Also called tentatively "Radium F", polonium was discovered by Marie Curie and her husband Pierre Curie in 1898 and was later named after Marie's native land of Poland (Latin: Polonia). Poland at the time was under Russian, Prussian, and Austrian partition, and did not exist as an independent country. It was Marie's hope that naming the element after her native land would publicize its lack of independence. Polonium may be the first element named to highlight a political controversy. Poland became an independent country again in 1918, following WWI.

Congratulations to Dutchbat III

Bosnian student radio eFM.ba started an internet appeal to congratulate the veterans of Dutchbat III who received a medal for serving in the enclave that fell to the Serbs in July 1995.

I am somewhat undecided on this issue. The poor lads simply had no mandate that would enable them to truly protect the Bosnian civilians. Furthermore they never received air support form the higher NATO echelons. But giving them an isignia for bravery is still something else I'd say. In a way this diplomatic riot diverts from what the international community should really do: force the ones truly responsible for the massacre - Mladic and Karadzic - to stand trial at the ICTY in The Hague. Only justice would eventually lead to reconciliation over this issue.

Spies like us?

Het Algemeen Dagblad haalt vandaag een oud verhaal uit de mottenballen. Ook de Volkskrant besteedde er al aandacht aan vanwege liquidatie van Litvinenko. En uiteraard ontbreekt het verhaal niet in het overzicht dat oud-hoofdcommissaris Jan Blaauw schreef over de meest opzienbarende Rotterdamse moorden in de laatste 100 jaar.

Op 23 mei 1938 werd in Rotterdam de Oekraïense nationalist Jevhen Konovalets omgebracht. Hij had in Hotel Atlanta in Rotterdam een afspraak met wat hij dacht dat een vertrouwde Oekraïener was uit de door de Sovjets overheerste linkeroever van de Dnjepr. Hij nam van de vertrouwde persoon een doos chocolade aan. De persoon verliet het hotel. Even later gevolgd door Konovalets. Op de Coolsingel aangekomen ontplofte de doos. Zijn lichaam werd uiteengereten.

Na enige tijd sloot de Rotterdamse politie de zaak onopgelost. Men vermoedde dat Konovalets het slachtoffer was geworden van een Sovjet-agent die Waluck heette.

Pas in 1994 krijgt dit verhaal een vervolg bij het verschijnen van de autobiografie van Pavel Soedoplatov. De agent van de NKVD (later KGB) - en vertrouweling van het hoofd van de geheime dienst Lavrentii Beria - bekende in opdracht van Stalin Konovalets te hebben vermoord en de roemruchte moord op Trotski in Mexico stad te hebben voorbereid. Na de dood van Stalin in 1953 ging Soedoplatov uiteindelijk ten onder met zijn beschermheer Beria.

Het verhaal is ook in 2006 nog niet afgelopen. Konovalets is destijds begraven op begraafplaats Crooswijk in Rotterdam. Sinds de onafhankelijkheid van Oekraïne in 1991 gaan er stemmen op om de overblijfselen van de nationalistenleider over te brengen naar zijn vaderland, waar hij verenigd zou worden met Stepan Bandera, Andriy Melnyk en andere leiders uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Een maand geleden kondigde de gemeenteraad van L'viv aan dat er eind 2006 op de Lytsjakivski begraafplaats in de stad een laan met eregraven wordt ingericht waarnaar de graven zullen worden overgebracht.

Maar wat zijn nu de parallellen tussen Konovalets en Litvinenko? Ze waren natuurlijk beiden de leider van het land onwelgevallig. En in beide zaken werd vrijwel meteen naar de Russische geheime dienst gewezen als verdachte. Maar een plot waarin Poetin zelf een decreet zou hebben uitgevaardigd om Litvinenko uit de weg te ruimen, gaat zelfs de meest cynische Kremlincriticasters te ver. En dat was precies wat met Konovalets wel is gebeurd.

Today an ancient mystery. Who dunnit? Who could have been so mean that John would refer to him in the Book of Revelations?

The Scripture seems clear:
And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. (Rev. 13:17-18)

But is it? The number 666 is thought to refer to Nero according to ancient numerology. But more than 100 years ago other indications were found: here you can see a fragment papyrus 4499 from Oxyrhynchus fragment. It seems clear that the number is χιϛ (616) and not χξς (666).

But if it's not 666 it cannot be Nero. And if it's thought to be 616 it could be Caligula. Too bad for all those RFID critics, Metal bands, George W. critics, etc.

Litvinenko case

The Litvinenko case that was all over London last week, is now also being investigated by my two friends sharing an office near the Great Communist Street in Moscow.

Apparently Remco had an interview this morning, while Coen is investigating the connection between the persons who allegedly murdered Litvinenko and the ones who freed the Dutch MSF aid worker Arjen Erkel in 2004. He has reason to believe they are the same KGB veterans. Coen is supposed to know: he wrote a book on the Erkel case and talked to the KGB-veterans.

In many respects this movie touches on key aspects of our discipline and expertise, and it also marks the distance that "Eurasia" has traveled in the American mentality since the appearance of other epoch-defining films (From Russia With Love, Doctor Zhivago, The Manchurian Candidate). Slavic Review invites its readers to submit contributions for a cluster of scholarly essays on Borat. Contributions may use the methodologies of any discipline so long as they relate in some substantial way to Borat and to interaction between Eurasia and the West.

Protesters in the streets of Lebanon have embraced the colour Orange for their protest, in honour of the Free Patriotic Movement led by general Michel Aoun. The Hezbollah-led protests are meant to persuade Prime Minister Siniora to resign.

Little over a week after they celebrated the second anniversary of the 2004 Orange Revolution, the Ukrainian Parliament (the Verkhovna Rada) sacked two of the revolution's figureheads: MFA Borys Tarasyuk and Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko.

The President and Parliament are still quarreling over the legitimacy of this last move. This will lead to case in front of the Constitutional Court when the President challenges this decision. During the Orange Revolution a compromise was reached were key Ministers in the government are appointed by the President and approved of by the Parliament.

Meanwhile the Revolution's Jeanne d'Arc, Yuliya Tymoshenko, MP, tries to initiate a referendum on the dissolution of parliament.

Cyber terrorism

For a long time I believed that Cyber Terrorsim was something that existed only in books like Dan Brown's Digital Fortress. As a matter of fact Wiki writes this: September 11, 2001 lead to further media coverage of the potential threats of cyberterrorism in the years following. Mainstream media coverage often discusses the possibility of a large attack making use of computer networks to sabotage critical infrastructures with the aim of putting human lives in jeopardy or causing disruption on a national scale either directly or by disruption of the national economy.

That corresponds with my narrow view on the subject. Of course I remember 1999, when I could witness the defacing of some Nato websites and later the retaliation of the Chinese for the 'accidental' bombing of their embassy during the Kosovo crisis. But cyber terrorism is different league.

Some hours ago the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) supposedly warned financial institutions for an upcoming attack on their systems. Al-Qaida would carry out cyber attacks on the U.S. financial industry to retaliate for abuses at the Guantanamo Bay prison facility.

Would there finally be an attack this winter?

Coen was writing today about the new design of the Gazprom Headquarters in St. Petersburg. Some weeks ago The Office for Metropolitan Architecture was selected to be one of the six architects on the short-list for the design. The Office was founded in 1975 by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.

I usually like Koolhaas design. But why would he want to build a giant (more than 300 m. high) game of Tetris on the Neva?

Second body found for Gongadze?

Several media have reported the last few days that Slovakian authorities unearthed a body that allegedly belongs to Heorhiy Gongadze, the critical internet journalist who disappeared in 2000 when Kuchma was president of Ukraine.

Usually this should be good news. But not now, since they already found a (headless) body in 2000. After a cover-up of the case under Kuchma, it became a theme during the Orange revolution. It is a test case for president Yushchenko, in which he could prove that he really can cope with corruption and do away with the old regime. Many people believe, however, that the Gongadze case was as such included in the round table talks between Yushchenko, Yanukovich and Kuchma that ended the Orange revolution almost two years ago. In that scenario Kuchma would go free. Time will tell.

Some interesting questions remain. If this second body belongs to Gongadze, whose body was found in Ukraine then?

Borat does funny things with language in his movie. All titles used on screen are genuine Russian. But the US and A map seems to use a language that only looks like Russian. On the map the names are spelled even more phonetically than Russian already does and still it's not Kazakh.

The words he uses most often are Polish (Jagshemash = "Jak się masz") and (Chenquieh = "Dziękuję"), but apart from that he appears to speak colloquial Hebrew (actually slang if I should believe the comments from those who understand it). And Azamat Bagatov speaks Armenian - the actor (Ken Davitian) actually is Armenian. (Please note that богатый means wealthy in Russian).

The answer to the quiz was: Gagarin. He is the only one I did not spot in the movie. In case you saw it, here's where to find the other three: There is a green box of Belochka behind the windscreen of the van throughout the movie (it's on the left if the windscreen is seen from the front.) The other two images, the girl from the Pinguin commercial and the image of Aliyev appear when the movie is over (by far the most hilarious part).

Aliyev actually appears there as the president of Kazakhstan (pause) ...NOT!

Autumn rain

While the rain is drumming on my rooftop for one of the last times in my old home, the fragile voice of Olga Krasko fills the room: жаркий огонь полыхает в камине / тень, моя тень, на холодной стене. (the hot fire whirls in the chimney / shadow, my shadow on the cold wall)

This brings together some intersting features. First of all Olga Krasko's voice. She was born 25 years ago in Kharkiv, which now lies in Ukraine. She plays the character Varvara in the movie Turkish Gambit after a novel by Akunin.

The poem that was used for this song is Песенка Изабеллы (Дождик осенний) by Bulat Okudzhava, one of the USSR's most celebrated bards:

It seems to have been used as such in the 1980s Soviet movie "Капитан Фракасс" (Le Capitaine Fracasse, after the 1863 novel by Théophile Gautier) by Vladimir Savelyev featuring the young Oleg Menshikov as Fracasse and Anna Isaikina as Isabella. The movie was shot at the Dovzhenko film studios in Kyiv. I wonder what the song sounds like in that movie.

I found the modern version of this song on the Turkish Gambit Soundtrack, which was done by Goran Bregović, one of my favourite composers or "one of the most recognizable modern composers of the Balkans" as Wiki calls it. (you'll hear more of him when you visit the movie "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan".)

It is strange that it took me almost a year to find the album. I have been looking for it in Kyiv at least twice (March, July) but no result. I finally found it here.

In de eerste week van november organiseerde Het Anker in Vlaardingen voor de zevende keer op rij samen met Spoetnik een rugzakjesactie voor kinderen in Oekraïne.

Tijdens de slotbijeenkomst op 8 november had Отрада een van haar eerste optredens. Volgens de site betekent het vreugde, hartelust, troost, weldaad. De groep is nog te nieuw om nu al te bepalen welke van de vier betekenissen het meest toepasselijk is...

En natuurlijk was er na afloop tijd voor een hapje en drankje, want без бокала нет вокала* :)

I have an old Langenscheidt dictionary that could be used as a guide to Russia. It was printed in Berlin almost 100 years ago. The issue I have was originally bought in a German bookstore that was located at Nevski Prospekt "№20". When I bought the book many years ago, a short text caught my attention: дозволено цензурою С.-Петербургъ, 20 Октября 1909 года. It had been allowed by the Imperial censor on 20 October 1909.

When I saw that text, it seemed lightyears away when Russia would print such verdicts on works of art, artist impressions or literary work. Of course the Soviet Glavlit was notorious, but things seemed to move into the right direction. That was, until I read the verdict on "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan".

Last weekend in Zagreb I was a bit surprised to see a familiar image all over town. It was the announcement for a Halloween party that was organised around a performance by the Macedonian band Mizar.

I just wondered about the image. It is the "Imago mortis" taken from the 1493 Liber chronicarum or Nuremberg chronicle by Hartmann Schedel (p. CCLXI). The image is an allegory of death, also called Danse Macabre.

A prominent Russian art dealer was recovering last night after being attacked by youths who smashed his gallery and destroyed paintings by an ethnic Georgian artist.

Russian television showed a video of paintings by Alexander Dzhikia that had been ripped from their frames, torn up and scattered around the gallery, The Times wrote.

This story gives me a very strange feeling. I am not in Moscow now, so it's difficult to judge. But after officials apperently started deporting Georgians from Moscow and asked schools in the capital to provide them with a list of pupils with Georgian surnames and then questioned the children about where their parents lived, for an outsider it really seems things are getting out of hand. This is scary. Where did we see this before?

In the meantime I wonder what the effect of this wave of anti-Georgian sentiment is on the warm relationship between Zurab Tsereteli and Yuri Luzhkov.

One of the latest developing "difference in opinions" between Russia and the EU seems not to be about democracy, or is it?

A majority of EU countries seems to have the opinion that vodka can be made of anything that contains enough starch. Of course Russians - like some EU countries - would argue that genuine vodka should contain grain only. An espert group met in Brussels this week to taste the difference.

Meanwhile the Russians had other concerns about spirits.

"Social Democrats Defeat Governing Party in Austria" , "Hungary PM stands firm after big poll losses" and "Early Results Show Bosnian Voters Split on Nation's Future" are just a few of this morning's headlines.

While most of Central Europe was facing important elections, Netherlands was just preparing, having the party conferences last weekend. The mud-throwing has started.

But what worries me most, is that among the three elections mentioned, the most significant ones for the future of Europe (namely the elections in Bosnia) were not mentioned in the Dutch newspapers. Still the collective shame over what happened 11 years ago?

There are more significant things happening in the area. "Serbia Asserts Its Sovereignty Over Kosovo in Legislation" according to the NYT.

It's going to be a hot autumn on the Balkans...

Sandra in the land of Beria

I wonder how Sandra Roelofs is doing these days. Tensions between what Russia regards as a runaway state and the Big Northern Neighbour rose over the arrest of four Russian soldiers on Friday.

Today Russian President Vladimir Putin called it "a sign of the political legacy of Lavrenty Pavlovich Beria" - carefully chosen words.

Georgia-born Beria was responsible for a number of notorious deportations and political murders under Stalin.

I hope Coen can comfort his previous compatriot. Already looking forward to his reports from the state in turmoil.

Just when it seems to get more calm in Budapest, a friend of mine sent me this story. Of course the comparison between 1956 and 2006 is a bit difficult, but that's exactly what the story tries to tell.

As I am flying there on 24 October, I wonder if the 50th anniversary of '1956' (one day before) will provide the spark that relights the fire on the streets. But who knows, Gyurcsány might not even survive the 1 October local elections.

Grbavica

Last week I visited Grbavica. No, I was not in Sarajevo, but I saw the movie by Jasmila Žbanić. Having read the reviews before, I had expected it to be more 'disturbing' than it actually was.

The film is full of stereotypes, almost caricatures. The bodyguard, the overdone mafioso with a gold chain and fleur-de-lis hanger. They even called him Puška, as he had been an army commander during the war. And even the prostitute in the film is from Ukraine.

If you think away those obvious stereotypes, what reamains is a good movie with nice cinematography.

Single mother Esma wants to grant her twelve-year-old daughter Sara's wish to participate in a school trip. A certificate proving her father is a war martyr would allow her a discount. But Esma continues to avoid Sara's requests for the certificate. She would rather find a way to pay full price for the trip. She believes not telling the truth about Sara's father is a way to protect both her and her daughter.

The lead role, Esma, is played by Mirjana Karanović, who also appeared in Kustorica's movies like Underground, and the award winning Otac na službenom putu. Also in that movie she played together with Emir Hadžihafisbegović (Puška).

De Verenigde Staten proberen een 'stille' revolutie teweeg te brengen in Rusland. Dat staat in een rapport dat een voormalige ambassadeur en een ex-spion donderdag in het Russische parlement hebben gepresenteerd. zo meldt het ANP.
De Amerikanen zouden van plan zijn belangrijke Russische politici en zakenmensen te isoleren door hen van corruptie te beschuldigen. Dat moet een anti-Kremlincampagne in de media teweeg brengen, waardoor de oppositie aan populariteit kan winnen voor de presidentsverkiezingen in 2008. De bedoeling zou zijn om naar voorbeeld van de 'Oranjerevolutie' in Oekraïne de positie van de zittende machthebbers te ondermijnen. De auteurs van het rapport roepen de staat op meer ,,materiële steun'' te geven aan belangrijke ,,politiek analisten'' die een dreigende revolutie tijdig moeten waarnemen.

Misschien een leuke bijverdienste voor deze, deze, of deze hardwerkende Moskoviet?

Coming back to my discussion about the Ottoman minaret. Wikipedia still mentions Eger to have the northernmost minaret of Europe and one of only three existing minarets in Hungary.

As a matter of fact Podolia was an Eyalet of the Ottoman Empire from 1674-1699. And if you look on the map here, you can see that Kamniets Podolski lies North of Eger (Erlau).

At least Eger can still claim to have the Northernmost Ottoman minaret in the European Union, but for how long?

LAV II - Active Saturday

If there is one city truly the mother of cities in central Europe, it'd be Vienna. Until recently that fact was expressed by having similar trams as in, let's say, Prague, Zagreb, or Budapest. While they are being replaced rapidly, it was worthwhile taking a picture. This one just arrived at the Praterstern station.

Vienna's largest and most famous park is the Prater, known for its Riesenrad (ferris wheel). The park was opened for public 240 years ago by the emperor. The amusement park where the ferris wheel is, is just a small part of the park.

From the Prater our cycling tour started, taking us towards the Donaustadt district. At the beginning we are still at the Hauptallee of the Prater.

At night there was a dinner in a vineyard on the edge of town (Nussdorf). Thanks to Ivana for the picture featuring some 50 years of AEGEE experience (Egens, Jos, Michiel, John) active from the early nineties.

LAV-I - the City

I was delighted to hear almost a year ago, that the 2006 Les Anciens Meeting was to take place in Vienna. The event was dubbed LAV.

Vienna, metropolis, the k.u.k. capital. Its grandeur is to be seen at nearly every streetcorner in the centre. Especially the Secession and similar styles together with the museums makes a visit worthwhile.

This last picture is on Strozzigasse, around the corner of where we stayed. I started to feel a bit unheimlich when seeing this mosaic. It commemorates the battle of Vienna, called Türkensturm. The mosaic was probably put there in the 1960s, way before the very word would get a negative second connotation...

Nederlandse slachtoffers bij ramp?

Sinds gisteravond heerst onduidelijkheid over de aanwezigheid van Nederlanders onder de slachtoffers van de vliegramp bij Donetsk. Daar stortte een Russich toestel neer dat een transitovlucht door het Oekraïense luchtruim uitvoerde.

Naar goed gebruik te lande heeft de luchtvaartmaatschappij een volledige passagierslijst op de site gezet. Bij slechts 4 van de passagiers ontbreekt het paspoortnummer (een aanwijzing dat het niet om Russen zou gaan). Het betreft Баккер Анна, Данилов Александр, Данилова Людмила en Mangue Siniouguina Svetlana. Eén naam doet Nederlands aan. Twee lijken een echtpaar te zijn en hebben een slavische naam. De laatste naam lijkt een Russin die getrouwd is met een Fransman. Buitenlandse Zaken heeft niet bevestigd dat er Nederlandse slachtoffers zijn bij de ramp.

Volgens de Volkskrant zou het gaan om twee volwassenen en een kind ‘tussen de 2 en 14 jaar’. De ouders van het kind zaten niet op de vlucht.

Bij het vliegtuigongeluk in de Oekraïne zijn drie mensen uit de provincie Groningen om het leven gekomen. Het gaat om een echtpaar uit Hoogezand en hun 7-jarige kleindochter uit de stad Groningen.

Geheime dienst over Hongersnood

In een poging om met het verleden af te rekenen, heeft de Oekraïense geheime dienst (SBU) een deel van het archief over de Hongersnood van 1932/33 vrijgegeven, meldde De Telegraaf vrijdag.

Historici van de SBU hebben na vier jaar doorspitten van de archieven 130 documenten met 3000 pagina's tekst op de website van de dienst geplaatst, meldde een woordvoerder vrijdag. Veel mensen in Oekraïne, dat in 1991 onafhankelijk werd, geloven dat de 'holodomor'-hongersnood een poging van Stalin was om de Oekraïense bevolking uit te roeien, aldus de krant van wakker Nederland.

Onder de documenten bevinden zich officiële stukken, maar ook bijvoorbeeld pamfletten. De afbeelding hiernaast komt uit een pamflet van het Oekraïense Revolutionaire Comité. Het roept boeren tot verzet: З рук до рук! З хати до хати! Селяне, не давайте хліба большевикам! (van hand tot hand, van huis tot huis, boeren geef geen brood aan Bolsjewieken!)

Ні одного зерна хліба червоним грабіжникам! Ні одного карбованця ненависним окупантам! (geen kruimel brood voor de rode rovers! Geen roebel voor de gehate bezetter!) zo besluit het pamflet. In 1991 na de onafhankelijkheid kwam dit collectieve trauma van de Oekraïense nationalisten in alle hevigheid naar boven. Met de openstelling van het archief wordt weer een nieuw hoofdstuk afgesloten. Het lijkt nog even te duren voor de hongersnood vergeven en vergeten wordt.

Ostalgische levensmiddelen

Tijdens een van mijn laatste bezoeken aan de Oekraïense ambassade werd mijn aandacht getrokken door een klein briefje. Daarop stond in het Russisch met Latijnse letters dat er op de “Piet Heinstraat 99” in Den Haag een winkel zit die in Balkanproducten is gespecialiseerd, maar nu ook “Russische” producten aanbiedt.

Een paar dagen geleden nam ik de proef op de som. Het is een sfeervol ingerichte winkel met inderdaad een mengeling van Balkan- en Russische levensmiddelen. Dus pašteta’s en pel’meni, eurokrem en krimsekt, ajvar en kaviaar. De eigenaresse vertelde dat ze er al anderhalf jaar zit en eerst gericht was op “Joegoslavische” producten. Vanwege de vraag van vele klanten naar Russische producten, heeft ze deze aan het assortiment toegevoegd. De komende weken is ze van plan om de Russische producten iets strategischer op te stellen, bij elkaar en in de buurt van de ingang. En ze zou zelfs kefir gaan laten aanvoeren. Ik ben benieuwd.

Het prijsniveau is voor Den Haag redelijk. Een stuk goedkoper (tot wel 30%!) dan “Supermarkt Moskou” aan de overkant, of destijds het winkeltje aan de boulevard op Scheveningen. Het assortiment bestaat uit het standaardpakket: bier, wijn, champagne, kvas, snoepjes, kaviaar, tvorog, pel’meni, konserven, grutten, enz.

Dus als de voorraad die je deze zomer hebt meegenomen tijdens de vakantie is uitgeput, dan weet je waar je terecht kunt!

Ik zoek een huis

Het moet er dan toch maar van komen. Verhuizen. Iets meer dan twee jaar op dezelfde plek lag toch al ruim boven het vijfjarig gemiddelde. Weg uit Erasmusveld, Wateringse Veld, Escamp. Net voordat alle voorzieningen af zijn :)

Na dit moedige besluit volgt een moeilijke vraag. Waar zou ik willen wonen? Waarschijnlijk wil ik wonen waar iedereen wil wonen die in Den Haag woont. In een mooi huis in een rustige buurt, niet ver van het centrum en niet te ver van de zee. Je komt dan al snel uit in Bezuidenhout, Regentessekwartier, Valkenboskwartier of het Zeeheldenkwartier.

Inmiddels heb ik een aantal tot nu toe mij onbekende sites aan mijn favorieten toegevoegd. Die sites hebben illustere namen als niksertussen, funda en dimo.

55 minuten werken voor een Big Mac

Volgens een onderzoek van de Zwitserse bank UBS naar de koopkracht in verschillende landen, duurt het voor een gemiddelde werker in Kiev 55 minuten om een Big Mac te verdienen. Het land zit daarmee in de middenmoot. Een Moskouse werker heeft minder dan de helft van de tijd nodig: 25 minuten. Ongeveer evenveel als in Rome of Athene. Amsterdam, Madrid, Brussel en Milaan zitten rond de 20 minuten. Het kortst doet de arbeider in Tokyo erover: 10 minuten. Maar of Japanners daarom zo lang werken?

Geen Timosjenko

In maart was alles simpel. Blok Joelia Timosjenko was bij de parlementsverkiezingen onverwacht tweede geworden en het land leek af te stevenen op een hernieuwde oranje coalitie. Vol vertrouwen werden daar zelfs weddenschappen op afgesloten.

Zoals altijd liep het anders. Het land had er 131 dagen voor nodig om een regering te vormen. Twee van de drie partijen die de Oranje Revolutie hadden gesteund, liepen 'over' naar het andere kamp om een regering van nationale eenheid te vormen.
En daarmee werd de virtuele winnaar van de parlementsverkiezingen de absolute verliezer. Haar rest niet veel anders dan op een rellerige manier oppositie te voeren - als enige oppositiepartij. De partij maakte een maand geleden de zitting van het parlement onmogelijk door luidruchtig protest met megafoons. Vervolgens verlieten de fractieleden de zitting van het parlement en dekten hun zetels toe met de vlag, alsof deze opgebaard waren. Als laatste actie plaatsten ze een Oekraïense vlag met een zwarte rouwwimpel op de zetel van de president in het parlement.

Het parlement heeft reces tot eind september. Ik ben benieuwd welke ludieke acties Timosjenko gaat bedenken...

Het is al dagen te warm in Nederland. Nu de derde hittegolf eraan zit te komen, is het ook geen weer om te bloggen. Inmiddels hebben de buitenwijken van Den Haag en de 'groenstroken' tussen de tramrails een kleur aangenomen die ik hier niet eerder had gezien en waar Kiev of Moskou in de zomer trots op zouden zijn.

En binnen is het met 26-28 graden dag en nacht ook nauwelijks uit te houden. Zucht.

Wat mij tot een paar weken geleden niet was overkomen, gebeurde zaterdag. Ik was in Chmelnitski, een provinciehoofdstad ten zuidwesten van Kiev. Met vrienden bezocht ik hun vrienden. De tafel werd gedekt en met twee Nederlandse mannen op bezoek, verscheen uiteraard de borsj op tafel. Nadat het dampende kopje bietensoep was geserveerd door de gastvrouw, wees ze naar een zakje dat op tafel stond en merkte ze op "en de mayonaise staat hier". Blijkbaar zag ik er nog steeds verbaasd uit, want de gastvrouw corrigeerde zich min of meer door te zeggen "nee, sorry, er is geen zure room".

In Kiev, op Andriivski Uzviz, naast het museum van Kavaleridze, staat sinds kort ook een Sjevtsjenko-monument. Daarmee heeft Kiev inmiddels twee monumenten. Deze lijkt eerder een studie voor een monument zoals dat in Romni staat.

Blauw-gele Revolutie?

Terwijl de fracties van Nasja Oekraïna en het Blok van Joelia Timosjenko (BJoeT) binnen in de Rada het spreken onmogelijk maakten, verzamelden zich vandaag buiten het parlement enkele honderden (volgens anderen enkele duizenden, maar die heb ik niet gezien - zie foto) aanhangers van Viktor Janoekovitsj. Ze eisen een einde aan het getreuzel van het op 26 maart gekozen parlement van Oekraïne.

Na de grondwettelijke maximumtermijn bijna te hebben overschreden, bereikten de oranjefracties vorige week een broze overeenkomst waarbij Petro Porosjenko parlementsvoorzitter zou worden en Joelia Timosjenko premier. Verliezer op papier van deze 'deal' was de Socialistische Partij van Oekraïne, die BJoeT en Nasja aan de meerderheid moest helpen. Ze schoven hun partijleider Oleksandr Moroz naar voren als parlementsvoorzitter, maar hij moest in de onderhandelingen buigen voor Porosjenko. Het eerste kabinet-Timosjenko viel juist over onenigheid tussen beide tegenpolen, Timosjenko en Porosjenko.

Moroz revancheerde zich door zich tegen de afspraken in op 6 juli kandidaat te stellen voor het voorzitterschap van de Verchovna Rada. Hij wist zich gesteund door Communisten en de Partij van de Regio's, de beide partijen die aan de andere kant stonden tijdens de Oranjerevolutie. Dit 'verraad' was meteen het einde van de prille Oranjecoalitie. Vanochtend vormden de Regio's, Socialisten en Communisten de 'anti-crisiscoalitie'. Timosjenko gaat de besluiten van deze nieuwe coalitie aanvechten. Volgens haar lezing van de grondwet kan een nieuwe coalitie pas besluiten nemen tien dagen nadat de vorige ter ziele is gegaan.

Meteen nadat het nieuws van de anti-crisiscoalitie bekend werd, sloeg PORA de tenten op op Majdan (foto). Volgens Joelia is de nieuwe revolutie begonnen. Naar verluidt wordt het de blauw-gele revolutie, naar de kleuren van de Oekraïense vlag. Zo mogelijk krijgen de revolutionairen het nog zwaarder dan in november 2004. Ik geef het ze te doen om bij 30 graden boven nul - in plaats van 20 onder nul - wekenlang in tenten te bivakkeren.

Crisis in Oekraïne

Het is weer crisis in Oekraïne... De oranjecoalitie is vanochtend vervangen door een coalitie van de Partij van de Regio's van Janoekovitsj samen met de Communisten en de Socialisten. De laatsten zijn gedeserteerd uit de Oranjecoalitie om hun voorzitter Oleksandr Moroz aan het voorzitterschap van het parlement te helpen. Iets na de middag werd bekend dat Janoekovitsj is gezozen tot voorzitter van het anti-crisis comité. Duizenden van zijn aanhangers hebben zich voor het parlement verzameld. Intussen is de zitting van het parlement geschorst tot 16:00 nadat leden van BJoeT en Nasja Oekraine het spreken onmogelijk maakten.

When I heard in March that I would be an election monitor in Kmelnitska Oblast, there was basically one place I would like to be stationed at: Kamyanets-Podilsky. It is a 13-th century fortified town, which is now on the list of Unesco World Heritage. It has a rich history being a border town on the Smotrych river, a contributory to the Dniestr. It was occupied by many, including Poland and the Ottoman Empire. Remnants remain. I was promised that if I'd return in summer, it would be green. And so it was, overwhelmingly. The picture features part of the city walls around the old town. The old town is surrounded by the river on all sides, taking an odd Omega-shaped turn.

Getting there is already something. Why would routes make sense? While I was returning from Romny on Wednesday evening and had to be back in Kyiv on Friday, I could not take the 20:36 overnight train from Kyiv. All possibilities left were the trains to Khmelnitsky and continue by bus, then take the overnight direct train back.

Even though the saying goes here that "the tongue brings one to Kyiv", the tongue is pretty much needed to go elsewhere also, for example to K-P. Khmelnitsky has two bus stations: a central one and the main one – on the edge of town. Originally designed to slightly divert traffic out of town, it no longer serves that purpose. Moreover, in order to go to K-P (or Chernivtsi and other places), one almost crosses the centre again. And the bus is certainly not the only vehicle. So it seems that the logic that was put in place when the town's infrastructure was planned, no longer applies. Even a provincial capital like Khmelnitsky is overcrowded with traffic nowadays. And why would there be a direct connection between the three stations (railway, old bus station, mian bus station)? I'd say that the tongue brings one anywhere in Ukraine :)

Een monument voor Sjevtsjenko (2)

Ook in Romni staat een standbeeld voor Taras Sjevtsjenko. Naar verluidt zelfs het eerste beeld dat in Oekraïne werd opgericht voor de grote nationale dichter. De beeldhouwer Ivan Petrovitsj Kavaleridze, afkomstig uit de buurt van de stad, vervaardige het ten tijde van de revolutie. Het werd onthuld in 1918. Andere Sjevtsjenkomonumenten van Kavaleridze zijn te bewonderen in Poltava (1925) en Soemi (1926). Het huis van de beeldhouwer in Romni wordt nog altijd bewoond door diens dochter, die inmiddels de respectabele leeftijd van 95 heeft bereikt.

Als je even niets van me hoort, kan dat kloppen. Ik zit in Oekraïne tot half juli. Als je wilt weten wat hier gebeurt, kun je een van de links aan de rechterkant proberen. Voorlopig gebeurt hier niet veel. Ze hebben hier nog steeds geen regering (jullie daar trouwens ook nog niet, of niet meer, of bijna wel? Laat Lubbers zijn karwei afmaken...) Janoekovitsj houdt de pogingen van oranje tegen om een regering te laten benoemen door de Rada. Naar verluidt omdat hij niet genoeg of niet de juiste parlementenscommissies kreeg, wie zal het zeggen. Het is hier niet zo heet als daar. Een graadje of 25 met af en toe een beetje wind, maar volop zon... Tot over twee weken!

Washington DC

Bij een luchtvochtigheid van meer dan 85% en een temperatuur boven 30°, is sightseeing in Washington DC echt afzien. Je gaat vanzelf langzamer lopen. Maar, er is een oplossing: City Segway Tours biedt excursies met gids aan. Zie ook de poserende Japanse groep voor het Witte Huis (hiernaast).

Waar het verstandiger was geweest om binnen te blijven onder de airco, gingen we toch lopen langs de monumenten en gedenktekens. DC staat er letterlijk vol mee. Naast de gebouwen als het Capitool, het Witte Huis, het Hooggerechtshof, enz. staan er vooral veel herinneringen aan het roemruchte Amerikaanse verleden. Verlichte presidenten worden afgewisseld met het optreden van Amerikaanse troepen in den vreemde. Vaak is het een niet los te zien van het ander, zoals hier:

Een monument voor Sjevtsjenko

In Washington DC, op de hoek van P Street en 22nd Street staat een monument voor Sjevtsjenko.

Het is een monument opgericht voor de 19e eeuwse dichter Taras Sjevtsjenko welteverstaan, niet voor de sterspits van Chelsea die zich met Oekraïne plaatste voor de achtste finale van het WK.

Het monument is in 1964 opgericht door de Oekraïense gemeenschap in de VS en is gewijd aan de bevrijding, vrijheid en onafhankelijkheid van alle bezette volkeren.

In zijn gedicht de Zwakzinnige uit 1857 verzucht Sjevtsjenko: "Wanneer zien wij een Washington met een nieuwe en rechtvaardige wet? Eens verwachten we hem". Hij verwijst daarmee naar de rol van George Washington tijdens de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog, de oorlog die leidde tot de onafhankelijkheid van de VS.

Het was gisteren niet druk op de 42e verjaardag van de onthulling van het monument.

Nederland erkent Montenegro

De Rijksministerraad heeft besloten dat het Koninkrijk de Nederlanden met ingang van heden Montenegro erkent als onafhankelijke staat. Dit besluit volgt op de bijeenkomst van de Raad voor Algemene Zaken en Externe Betrekkingen van de Europese Unie van afgelopen maandag 12 juni, waarin werd besloten dat de EU in de toekomst betrekkingen zal ontwikkelen met het soevereine en onafhankelijke Montenegro. Erkenning van Montenegro is evenwel een aangelegenheid van de individuele EU-lidstaten. (RVD, 16 juni 2006)

De hand die Christus doopte

Breaking News. Ongeveer op hetzelfde moment dat Rusland als een van de eerste landen de onafhankelijkheid van Montenegro erkende, kwam de "Hand die Christus doopte" aan in Moskou. De reliekschrijn van de rechterhand van Johannes de Doper maakt deel uit van de rijke verzameling van het mannenklooster van de Heilige Peter van Cetinje in Cetinje, van 1482 tot 1946 de hoofdstad van Montenegro.

De hand was eerst eigendom van de Romanovs, maar werd na de Russische Revolutie het land uitgesmokkeld. De hand is nog tot 16 juni te bezichtigen in de Christus-Verlosser Kathedraal in Moskou. Daarna gaat hij op toernee en is hij nog te zien elders in Rusland, Oekraïne en Belarus.

God, behoed de Tsaar!

Afgelopen zaterdag trad het Chor Toeretskogo (het koor van Michail Toeretski) op in het Kurhaus tijdens de uitreiking van de RusPrix. Aan het einde van het optreden dankte de Russische ambassadeur in Nederland, Kiril Gevorgjan, het koor en zijn artistiek leider. Het tienstemmige koor verzamelde zich rond de diplomaat. Bij wijze van toegift brachten ze een laatste nummer, a capella. Het koor hief tot hilariteit van de zaal "Bozje, Tsarja chrani!" aan, het volkslied het Tsaristische Rusland van 1833 tot 1917.

Of het koor gelijk had, zullen we in 2008 zien. Maar als voorbode stond gisteren dit artikel in BN/De Stem:

De fraaie Russisch-orthodoxe Sint-Nicolaaskathedraal vormde begin dit jaar inzet van een conflict tussen het Kremlin en de Russische gemeenschap in Nice. President Vladimir Poetin vindt dat de kerk, gebouwd in opdracht van tsaar Nicolaas II en voltooid in 1912, vanaf volgend jaar Russisch eigendom moet zijn. Dan loopt de erfpacht af, die in 1908 verleend werd voor 99 jaar aan een Russisch-orthodoxe vereniging in Nice. (Lees verder)

Remco is een held

Zaterdag werd Remco Reiding geëerd voor het werk dat hij – als vrijwilliger – heeft gedaan voor het Russische Ereveld in Amersfoort. Na een onderzoek voor de Amersfoortse Courant raakte hij betrokken bij het lot van de Sovjets die vielen voor onze vrijheid. Toen hij eind jaren ’90 begon, was geen enkele van 865 begraven slachtoffers ‘thuisgebracht’. Nadat Remco naar aanleiding van zijn onderzoek de eerste twee nabestaanden had opgespoord in de voormalige Sovjet-Unie ging het snel. De teller staat inmiddels op 99. Het jubileum van 100 ligt in het verschiet. Reiding, die nu als correspondent voor GPD in Moskou woont en werkt, voert zijn speurtocht met name uit via lokale media. De 99 ‘hervonden’ gevallenen zijn vooral afkomstig uit het huidige Rusland en Oekraïne. Remco ontving vandaag uit handen van juryvoorzitter Ivanov de Rusprix 2006. Gefeliciteerd! (zie ook hier.)

Het lijkt een week waarin mensen in het zonnetje worden gezet: afgelopen donderdag ontving Beja Kluiters van stichting Spoetnik de Orde van Vorstin Olga in de derde klasse uit handen van de Oekraïense minister voor Volksgezondheid en Kateryna Joesjtsjenko, de echtgenote van de president van Oekraïne.

Oranjecoalitie struikelt over voorzitter

Waar iedereen dacht dat Timosjenko het struikelblok zou zijn voor de oranjecoalitie, lijkt deze nu te mislukken "omdat de Socialisten vasthouden aan hun kandidaat voor het voorzitterschap van het parlement", aldus de woordvoerder van Nasja Oekrajina. Ja, ja, lekker makkelijk. De twee grootste onderhandelaars liggen vechtend op straat, en de zwarte piet gaat naar de kleinste partij.

Laten we een paar maanden terug gaan in de tijd. Kiev, donderdag 23 maart. De dag van de grote rally van Joelia. NRC-correspondent Coen van Zwol heeft een interview met haar. Timosjenko staat er niet goed voor in de peilingen. Het interview gaat verder. De spanning stijgt. De journalist vraagt haar of ze volgens de huidige peilingen zichzelf ziet als speaker. De journalist tekent haar reactie op: „Ik ben belasterd, vernederd, verraden. Maar zoals de Britse koningin Victoria haar dochter adviseerde aan de vooravond van een gearrangeerd huwelijk: ‘sluit je ogen en denk aan Engeland’. Ik ben bereid mijn ogen te sluiten en aan Oekraïne te denken.’’.

Victoria Koblenko, die ook aanwezig was, schrijft in haar dagboek: Haar angstaanjagende zelfbeheersing leidde ertoe dat er geen boeiende vragen werden gesteld totdat NRC begon te provoceren...kennelijk terecht want Julia flirtte zowat met onze correspondent! Het ijs werd gebroken, eerste glimlach van Timoshenko op de gevoleige plaat vastgelegd en het regende leuke quote's in de serie van: "live politiek debat is net telefoonsex, you never know what you're going to get".

De komende dagen zullen leren hoe vooruitziend de blik van Van Zwol was.

Interestingly enough, there is more the Yushchenkos share with the Netherlands than just the colour Orange. Mrs. Yushchenko told in Vlaardingen that especially her husband adores herrings. Because unfortunately he was unable to visit Vlaardingen - known for its herrings - himself, Mrs. Yushenko received a large serving of herrings as a present to her husband.

I hope the Dutch speciality will inspire Mrs. Yushchenko also in her cooking and entertaining using recipes from various parts of the world.

Revanche van Oranje voor de met 2-1 verloren openingswedstrijd op 24 mei? Op 4 juni weten we het. Dan spelen de teams vanaf 20:45 tegen elkaar in het 'stadion van de 21e eeuw' Estádio do Bessa Século XXI (30.000 zitplaatsen, het stadion van Boavista).
